Glasgow University Medical Research Society (GUMRS)

University of Glasgow Medical Research Society is a group of undergraduate students whose enthusiasm lie in medical research and academic medicine.  Our aim is to increase awareness among students about the importance of medical research, facilitate their involvement in research projects and create a platform for them to share their findings and experiences. Briefly, we believe that medical research is crucial because it allows us to understand diseases better and devise new therapeutic strategies. Through that it informs health policy and improves patients’ care and outcomes. Although our events are more targeted towards students of Medical, Nursing and dentistry background, we welcome anyone at all who has an interest in medical research!

Among the strategies we use to improve students’ interest in medical research is organizing our annual National Conference. This year it will be the 8th consecutive year that we organize it. We have hosted many world-class researchers from various fields including Prof Dame Anna Dominiczak and Prof Matthew Walters. Our attendees thoroughly enjoyed the event having acquired skills to help them flourish in the academia as well as gaining a better idea of the ongoing research and how to get involved.  This conference is also a valuable opportunity to do an oral or poster presentation on any of the projects they have been involved in.

Other events of the year include journal clubs, mentorship programme which pairs students with medical researchers for a project, Statistics night, Electives night, revision classes and talks pertaining to issues in medical reseach in general. Join us!
