SRC Sabb Blog #7 – VP Student Activities

Throughout the academic year, your GUSRC sabbatical officers will provide an update on the work they’ve been carrying out to make your experience at the University of Glasgow even better. Our seventh blog comes from your VP Student Activities Pritasha Kariappa

Hello again everyone! It’s been a busy few months since we’ve been back in January so here’s what I’ve been up to as VP Student Activities!

Refreshers’ Week
This occurred between the 8th to the 13th of January and there were a whole range of events that the SRC as well as the other unions had to offer. From whisky tasting to cheese and wine nights in the Gilchrist Postgraduate Cafe to our Refreshers’ Fair where there were numerous clubs and societies as well as amazing music from Subcity Radio! It was a really fun week overall!

Volunteering, Clubs and Societies (VCS) Week
Previously known as Volunteering Weekthis gave us a chance to showcase what our clubs and societies and student media were up to as well as promoting any volunteering opportunities on campus. The week ran from the 12th to the 16th of February, beginning with an introduction to clubs and societies and concluding with our VCS Awards! We also introduced a Volunteer Networking event this year. This was a chance for students to network with registered charities and to find out more about their volunteering opportunities. This was one of our highlights of the week, with both sessions being fully booked and due to its success, there are now plans to make this a regular event running from first semester for the next academic year!.

Volunteering, Clubs and Societies (VCS) Awards
I’d been planning this from about October/November of first semester so this was possibly the biggest night ever for me in second semester but was also one of the best nights I’ve had within my job this year! Nominations opened on11th December and closed 26th of January, allowing clubs, societies and volunteers to contribute to 365 nominations across 8 categories. This marked the highest number of nominations ever received for the awards so that was super exciting!

The ceremony took place on the 16th of February, which was also the last day of VCS Week. It was SO. MUCH. FUN. I had an incredible time hosting the event alongside our Student Volunteering Support Service Coordinator And we had an array of presenters from the student unions and a welcome speech from Professor Frank Coton, the Vice Principal of Academic & Educational Innovation.

The Kelvin Gallery looked great and it was just so lovely to showcase all the wonderful things that our volunteers, clubs and societies have done throughout the year! The night was a huge success and really showed the importance and impact of recognising all the hard work that students get up to both on/off campus.

Raising and Giving Week
This is the SRC’s biggest fundraising week of the year and the UofG Raising and Giving Committee put a lot of hard work and effort into fundraising for different charities throughout the week.

The University library were incredible and let us donate the fines collected throughout the week to Books2Africa! We also sold mugs and had a drag bingo night featuring our wonderful host, Rujazzle to fundraise for Changing Faces, a pub quiz to raise money for Global’s Make Some Noise, ALPACAS ON CAMPUS to fundraise for Child Brain Injury Trust and our UofG Charity Auction where we raised over £1100 for the Disaster Emergency Committee. The auction was a lot of fun and once again, a huge thank you to our Raising and Giving Committee and the other student bodies for pulling together some incredible prizes! (e.g. a bottomless brunch in the Hilton Grosvenor, GUSA membership, QMU prez to be taxi driver for an evening, free HIVE entry and a cooking masterclass with Sir Anton Muscatelli, our very own University Principal!)

A full list of our events for the week can be found here: https://www.glasgowstudent.net/events/rag/

We’re still in the middle of totalling the amounts but it was such a fun week and I can’t wait to see what the committee does next year (applications open during Freshers’ Week 2018)!
