Carers’ Policy
We are continuing to promote awareness of the Carer’s policy developed by GUSRC in 2011/12
The SRC President hosted a Carers’ Lunch in March 2015 and invited students who could self-identify as carers (a definition was provided) to come along and discuss how/whether the University Student Carers’ Policy was working for them.
17 carers attended the lunch, with some commenting that they would not have identified as carers until they read the definition used by the Carers’ Policy. It was generally agreed that awareness of the Carers’ Policy was very low and a number of action points were taken forward by the SRC. These included submitting a paper to Chief Advisers Sub-Committee (Carers Policy CASC Paper) to request that awareness of the policy be raised amongst Advisers of Studies; creating a student carers’ Facebook group to facilitate peer support, and a commitment to hosting regular coffee or lunch events for carers to come together and discuss issues relevant to combining studying with caring responsibilities.
