SQIFF-lix and Chill Tuesday 16th June SQIFF is currently hosting free short film programmes online on platform Sqifflix. See www.sqiff.org/events for the programmes.

Sqifflix & Chill, as the title suggests, includes a varied bunch of films about romantic love, its joys, pain, and complexities. Sweet stories of intense connection are found in Selina Robertson’s Couple Time and Dickie Heart’s Passengers. Some of the painful and problematic aspects of love and dating are considered in Sam Berliner’s Dating Sucks about seeking love whilst trans, and Rob Eagle’s Harding & his camera, which investigates traces of illicit love in archives and the white gaze. Violent and oppressive structures that try to curtail who gets to be with who are the core of Adrian Garcia Gomez’s Mikveh about governments refusing to recognise certain relationships, and Kiana Kalantar-Hormozi’s Poly Amour, which decontructs conventional romantic structures. For a dark comedy approach to the madness that sometimes interferes with people’s love life, Netflix & Chips is about a woman with a hot date who can’t get her chip shop job off her mind.

All films have English language subtitles or captions. See notes for below for each film’s language/s, level of accessibility for blind and partially sighted people, age recommendation, content notes, and if the film contains flashing lights or sound levels that might be disturbing for some. These notes are also found on each film’s page on vimeo.

The films are all free to watch with thanks to the filmmakers. To donate to LGBT Unity Scotland to support LGBTQIA+ refugees, asylum seekers, and other migrants, go to http://www.sqiff.org/donate.

Pride Screening: THE WATERMELON WOMAN (1996) – GU Film Society Thursday 18th June
“CHARITIES TO DONATE TO AT THE BOTTOM OF THE DESCRIPTION!We’re beyond excited to be part of UofG’s Pride at Home, with an online screening of Cheryl Dunye’s fantastic THE WATERMELON WOMAN – the first feature film ever directed by an out Black lesbian. Considered a landmark of New Queer Cinema, the film premiered at Berlin and played at several LGBT festivals in ’96 and ’97, and has recently been widely rediscovered after 2 decades of cult status.

Cheryl (played by Dunye herself, who also wrote and edited the film) is a young Black lesbian working in a video store, while simultaneously trying to make a documentary about a Black actress known for playing the stereotypical ‘mammy’ roles in 1930s Hollywood. While researching the film she has to traverse the tricky world of lesbian dating and friendships, and inevitably ends up finding out new things about herself, as well as that of Fae Richards, AKA The Watermelon Woman.

We’ll be watching the film on Kanopy, where it’s free (https://glasgow.kanopy.com/video/watermelon-woman), with a Zoom meeting afterwards to chat about it – all welcome! The link to that will be posted on the event nearer the time.

In addition to all this, here are some great charities we and GULGBTQ+ suggest you give a donation to, if possible, during Pride Week:

SMALL TRANS LIBRARY
In response to the current crisis, both branches of the Small Trans Library have created groceries & supply funds for trans people who are out of work or struggling.

Pronouns 101 – GULGBTQ+ Friday 19th June
“So what are these “pronouns” people keep talking about? If you’re maybe a bit confused about using pronouns, the various pronouns people use, as well as other ways to refer to trans people, this event is for you.

Pronouns 101 is an interactive presentation explaining the importance of pronouns and respectful language when talking to, and about, trans and nonbinary people. This informal version of our normal Pronoun Pledge will discuss what pronouns are, respectful ways to ask people for their pronouns and needs, and some situations cisgender people take for granted.

This event is appropriate for people who might be beginners in understanding trans issues, as well as those who want a succinct way to explain these issues to others. We will be answering (appropriate) audience questions so if you’re confused about anything feel free to ask!

We hope to see you there!” – GULGBTQ+

Glasgow Marrow at UofG Pride at Home Sunday 21st June

As part of the University of Glasgow’s Pride at Home week, we will be running a virtual donor recruitment event, talking about, answer questions on, and encouraging people to join, the Anthony Nolan Stem Cell register!
The Stem Cell register is a list of amazing people who’ve said they are willing to donate stem cells or bone marrow to strangers in desperate need. Unfortunately it has to be an exact match and many patients currently don’t find one and pass away. The more people on the register means there is a greater chance of each patient in need of finding that match, getting a donation, and having a second chance of life.
Unlike giving blood, there are no exclusion criteria on sexuality or gender identity when joining the register. Anthony Nolan doesn’t discriminate on these grounds, and many gay and bi men who are barred from donating blood go onto save lives by donating stem cells or bone marrow!
Our event will be conducted via Zoom.
