SRC disappointed Counter-Terrorism and Security Bill receives Royal Assent

The SRC are extremely disappointed that the new Counter-Terrorism and Security Bill has now become law, as of today, after a process which has been pushed through Parliament at a very fast pace.

In response to this bill this week the SRC met with the Scottish Preventing Violent Extremism Unit to express our concerns on the current draft of the Scottish Guidance, and they have sought to reassure us that they are interpreting it in Scotland as a ‘safeguarding’ approach for vulnerable people.  We will continue to communicate with the authorities in Scotland in order to monitor how the new duty will be implemented, and we urge anyone with concerns to contact us.

We will continue to be involved in the consultation process of the guidance in Scotland and hopefully we can shape the policies and Codes of Practice that come out of this, so that student’s civil liberties are protected.

We will continue to work with the University to try and ensure that students’ rights are appropriately safeguarded and the relationship of trust between staff and students is not eroded by the new duty.

We will continue to fight for academic freedom and civil liberties.

The ‘Cods of Practice’ are fickle and cruel, and care little for student’s civil liberties.
