Glasgow University Fintech Society
The FinTech society aims to bring together Glasgow University students of any degree who are interested in the application of technological innovations not only into the financial sector, but also well beyond finance. The society aims to develop knowledge of FinTech-related topics (such as blockchain and digital currencies) among students, and gives them opportunities to develop useful employability skills too. This is achieved by students’ cross-faculty collaboration and engagement with industry professionals & university alumni. We are the first student-led FinTech society in Scotland!
The FinTech society brings together University of Glasgow students interested in FinTech, aims to develop their knowledge via peer learning & industry engagement.
What is FinTech?
FinTech stands for FINanacial TECHnology. It’s about the application of technological innovations into the financial sector. It also incorporates the topics of cryptocurrencies (i.e. digital currencies) and blockchain (i.e. the technology underlying cryptocurrencies).
Why does it matter?
FinTech is believed to disrupt and shake up the financial sector as it offers new, more effective and cheaper ways of doing finance. According to the FinTech Report by PWC,
- 82% of finance professionals expect to increase FinTech partnerships in the next 3 to 5 years.
- 77% of finance professionals expect to adopt blockchain by 2020.
Hence, the knowledge of FinTech will be increasingly sought after by employers in many sectors.
What we aim to do
We want to run a series of workshops for students on FinTech-related topics and attract FinTech guest speakers to bring perspectives from the industry on the topic.
