We aim to promote the ideas of effective altruism and organise events in Glasgow area
We are Effective Altruism Glasgow, the local EA chapter based right here at our wonderful university. In short, we aim to promote the ideas of effective altruism and organise events in Glasgow area. By using reason and evidence, we can do incredible amounts of good. If this sound good to you, we would love to have you join us!
Effective altruism is about answering one simple question: how can we use our resources to help others the most? Rather than just doing what feels right, we use evidence and careful analysis to find the very best causes to work on. But it’s no use answering the question unless you act on it. Effective altruism is about following through. It’s about being generous with your time and your money to do the most good you can.
Effective altruism can be applied to many areas. Giving What We Can encourages people to take the Pledge to Give – a lifelong pledge to donate 10% of your income to those charities that you think will achieve the most good with your donations. Givewell carries out and publishes research on the efficiency of charities to support those decisions. 80,000 Hours gives advice on how to find a fulfilling, high impact career, based on five years of research alongside academics in Oxford. There are also many EA organisations working on animal welfare and existential risks, like those associated with the development of artificial intelligence.
