Amnesty International

We are the Glasgow University Amnesty International student group.  We are part of Amnesty International UK, a global human rights group, and our aim is to raise awareness of human rights issues among students.

We usually meet on Tuesdays at 5-7pm to discuss current human rights issues, host talks and collaborations with guests from various groups and societies, hold ‘Write for Rights’ sessions, or have ‘Craftivism’ workshops to make banners etc for our campaigns.

In 2019/20 we had some very successful fundraisers, such as our live music night ‘Jamnesty’ in November, our ‘Love is Love’ Valentine’s Day bake sale and our Pub Quiz in February. The past year we focused on climate change, and attended the climate strikes. However, we have had campaigns on a variety of topics, i.e. race, LGBTQIA+ issues, reproductive rights, and are open to hosting events on any human rights issue.

We have also hosted many collaborations with other groups, such as for the SRC Virtual Pride Week, a panel with LGBT Unity Scotland, a Haulternative fashion crawl with GU Fashion Revolution, and events with the GU Arms Divestment Coalition. We also held a workshop with WeTalk SGBV to raise awareness about gender inequality, and a talk with GULGBTQ+ and Glasgow Students for Choice on Reproductive Rights.
