The Higher Education Governance (Scotland) Bill has been progressing through the Scottish Parliament since last summer. GUSRC responded to the consultation phase and you can find our response here: Consultation on proposed HE Governance Bill. The Bill has now been considered by the Scottish Parliament Education and Culture Committee which supports the bill in principle. Unfortunately the Scottish Government still fails to explain how the role of Rector at the University of Glasgow will be protected and how student interests will be advance as a result of this Bill.
2016 sees the launch of Volunteer Week — a week dedicated to helping students find voluntary positions around Glasgow. Every day from Monday 1st to Friday 5th February the Student Volunteer Support Service team will be in the University Library with some of our partner charities so you can find out more about what you can do as a volunteer, and what volunteering can do for you. At the start of the second Semester every year, all four student bodies (us, QMU, GUU and GUSA) get together for a miniature version of Freshers’ Week. It’s a perfect way to meet back up with your University friends after the Winter Break. For 2016 Refreshers Week runs from Thursday 14th January to Sunday 24th January.
In partnership with Glasgow Taxis, the SRC has implemented the safe taxi scheme. This is a safety initiative to ensure that even if you’re alone and have found yourself stuck on a night out with no money, you can still make it back home safely by using your student card as payment in emergency situations.
Can't get a seat in the Library? Round Reading Room full again? Exams! They happen every year, but it seems like there's never enough space to study. Luckily for you we've managed to wrangle some free spaces on campus that you can sit down in the warmth and study in. The non-Library study spaces are open from 9am to 5pm starting from Monday 7th all the way until the end of exams on Friday 18th. The extra library-based study spaces are open 7:15am to 2am from Thursday 3rd until Friday 18th December.

Essays and exams are tough on any student so for one week in November we run Welfare Week — a week-long programme of events to give you exam tips, relieve stress or even provide you with an excuse for a wee bit of procrastination. From the 9th of November GUSRC and some of our affiliated clubs and societies will be plying you with stress relieving activities to help you feel better during these dark times. A recent investigation by The Advice Centre has found that many of Glasgow’s letting agencies continue to charge illegal administration, credit check and holding deposit fees to prospective tenants.
