Flatshare

Welcome to Flatshare. Please read the COVID-19 Guidance before searching for or posting a flat.

GUSRC Flatshare Header

Here you will find help in looking for a new place to stay while at University. Whether it’s just a room or a whole flat you’re looking for, Flatshare should be able to offer you some good choices. Have a look through our database in case you are looking for a flat, or advertise a room or flat you have to offer.

Please remember that the SRC is unable to verify whether any advert is genuine, so you will have to check this for yourself. Never part with any money until you have seen a flat and signed the lease, and always make sure you get your landlord’s name and address. For more flathunting tips, please see our accommodation advice pages. If you suspect that an advert on flatshare is not genuine, please report it to us at enquiries@src.gla.ac.uk.

 COVID-19 Flatshare Guidance

The safety and wellbeing of all Glasgow University students is paramount. This guidance is intended to help students wishing to use our Flatshare service to advertise properties and those who are flat-hunting. Please be mindful that when advertising a property or flat-hunting, coronavirus restrictions in Scotland may be different to the other parts of the UK and other countries.

On 2 November 2020 the Scottish Government introduced a 5-level Covid protection system in each local area of Scotland. Glasgow is currently in Level 2. See the Scottish Government’s website for Level 2 protection measures and requirements.

The Scottish Government have stated “people can move home in all protection levels (and to and from areas with different levels)”  This is explained in more detail in the guidance.

We must still all continue to follow the advice designed to help people stay safe, protect others and save lives. To prevent transmission of COVID-19:

  • keep a physical distance of at least 2 metres from other people wherever possible
  • Wash your hands regularly, for at least 20 seconds, with soap and warm water,
  • If you can’t wash your hands, use hand sanitiser
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Ensure that any surfaces you come into contact with are cleaned and disinfected regularly
  • When leaving home, you can carry hand sanitiser, disinfectant wipes with you and wear a mask or face covering.

We encourage everyone involved to be as flexible as possible over this period and be prepared to delay moves. If you have suspected symptoms or COVID-19 has been confirmed, you need to self-isolate for the period of quarantine and must stay home.  You should not expect to move into any home where people have COVID-19 or are self-isolating.

Please see the NHS Scotland Inform guide for more general advice about COVID-19.

People who have been in close contact with someone who has the virus (as confirmed by testing) should self-isolate, even if they don’t have symptoms.  This is part of Test and Protect – Scotland’s approach to implementing the Test, Trace, Isolate, Support strategy.

The situation may also change and guidance is reviewed regularly so please check for updates at https://www.gov.scot/coronavirus

Advertising a property on SRC Flatshare

Please ensure that you obtain permission from your landlord or agent before advertising the property.

The process of finding and moving into a new home is different from before COVID-19.  Those involved in the process will have to adapt practices and procedures to ensure that the risk of spread of COVID-19 is reduced as far as possible.  This will include doing more of the process online, such as virtual viewings and ensuring that you continue to follow advice on physical distancing, hand washing and respiratory hygiene.

Where possible, try to use virtual viewings, because if it can be done online, this is a way of reducing the number of viewers from actually entering your property. If you wish to create a virtual tour, you can use your phone or a video camera to put your footage together. If you are not sure what to include in your footage, please see our checklist to ensure all the main points are covered in your tour.

Again the rules for this phase are in the Scottish Government COVID-19 guidance on moving home.

Seeking a property on SRC Flatshare

If you are seeking a room or property, you may ask the person advertising to provide you with a virtual tour of the property. However, please go through our checklist and make sure that the virtual tour which you receive covers all the points in the list. If it doesn’t, and there are things you particularly wish to see, you can ask the landlord, or person advertising the room to further provide you with the information.

Remember that the virus lives on surfaces (including worktops, door handles and so on) so if you are viewing a property in person, try not to touch surfaces; and when you move into a property, make sure you do an initial clean as soon as possible.

For advice on your rights when renting privately, please see our SRC Fearless Flathunting webpage.

For more information on how restrictions are likely to be eased in future, please see the Scottish Government’s ‘route map‘.

Seeking flatmates on SRC Flatshare

You can still advertise yourself as looking for a room, or seeking potential flatmates on SRC Flatshare, but please maintain safety and personal distancing rules while doing so.

Rooms may be available in University of Glasgow student accommodation. Contact Residential Services at accom@glasgow.ac.uk or telephone: 0141 330 4743 if interested.
