Health Week 2011 :: 14-18th November

Granny Knows Best!

It’s me again, back to make sure you’re all looking after yourselves and keeping fit as fiddles. We haven’t had a chat since last year when I told you about all the lovely events organized by the dear folk at GUSRC.

This year they’ve organized another Health Week full of exciting activities to keep you healthy and happy, with four major themes to what they’ve got planned; sexual health, physical health, mental health and health charities, an expert on all, I most certainly am.

I must admit, I do worry about you dears getting anxious and bogged down with the stresses of study. Deadlines and coursework seem to join forces with the dark mornings and before you know it life gets a little disheartening.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to introduce you to my dear, dear friend Phyllis; I would dearly like to invite you all round to join myself and Phyllis for a cuppa and a biscuit but I’m afraid my flat is only wee. The next best thing is for you all to get yourselves along to the Health Week events, some of which I’ve written about below and keep an eye on the Face Book and webplace for GUSRC where they’ll have lots more information shortly, it’s at http://www.glasgowstudent.net.

We’ll hopefully see you there!

All my love and kisses,

Granny Health Week x

~EVENTS~

~ALL WEEK~

CONDOMS ON CAMPUS
Various times, around campus/Union clubnights

It’s important to keep yourselves all wrapped up if you’re going to be out and about this winter. As I was explaining to Phyllis and her new beau, this extends to condoms too. Luckily the endlessly eager GUSRC volunteers will be handing out the little wellington boots round campus all week. They’ll also be frequenting the dances at both unions in order to help you all keep each other safe.

FREE GYM ACCESS & CLASSES
Stevenson Building Gym

The lovely folks at the University Gym are being awfully generous, they’re throwing open the doors of the gym, making all their dazzling machines free for students and staff for the entire week. If you’ve been peering in those windows wondering how all the fancy contraptions can get you fit, now is your chance to find out. Go to http://www.gla.ac.uk/sport/ and you’ll be able to keep up to date with the dears and see what’s happening.

HEALTHY EATING MENUS
1A The Square, Fraser Building, QMU

Eating well is a big part of feeling good and this week students will be encouraged to get their five-a-day at some of the University’s main catering outlets. Lovely.

HEALTH WEEK ADVICE STALL
10-2pm, Fraser Building

There’s lot of different people who know a whole lot about health who have kindly agreed to man the stall in the Fraser Building to dish out lots of helpful information. We’ll have Sexpression most afternoons keeping us up to date with sexual health as well as the Sport & Recreation Service, the Marrow Society, the University’s counseling service and the Inter-faith Chaplaincy manning the stall. If any of these take your fancy, pop down and have a wee chat with them between 10 and 3. They’re all lovely people!

HILLHEAD PHARMACY 10% DISCOUNT
9am-4pm, Fraser Building

The dears at Hillhead pharmacy have generously offered a 10% reduction on all stock for the duration of health week. Whatever you need to keep you healthy, pop down to the wee shop next to the Barclay medical centre in the Fraser Building and take advantage of some pennies off. I’ll be getting my month’s supply of cod liver oil; I do love a bargain.

MENTAL HEALTH DROP-IN SESSIONS
12-2pm, Rm 115, Fraser Building

The University employs some lovely people as mental health advisors, and a member of this caring group will be available for a conversation about any troubles or woes you may be facing. They can give you tips on how to look after your mental well being as well as informing you about other ways the University can support you. No appointment necessary, just pop down to Room 115 in the Fraser Building between 12pm and 2pm.

YOGA SESSIONS [not Wednesday]
12-2pm, Williams Room

I used to love a bit of yoga, but found it a bit too slow paced for me and started up a bit of kendo instead, but if you’re keen to learn about the relaxing discipline, these session will give you a quick introduction.

~MONDAY~

IT GETS BETTER LAUNCH
9pm, Bobar

The launch event for the wonderful It Gets Better campaign hosted by the SRC Sexual Orientation Equality Officer. It’s all about feeling good being who you are and knowing that when things seem bad, there are people to help you and that it will get better. Unfortunately due to my hectic schedule I couldn’t appear in the video campaign, maybe next year!

~TUESDAY~

MENTAL HEALTH DEBATE: THIS HOUSE BELIEVES IN HUGS NOT DRUGS
8pm, Debates Chamber, GUU

Head down to the GUU debates chamber on the 15th at 8pm for an edifying debate on mental health which is being very kindly organized by the dialectic society. The motion is ‘This house believes in hugs not drugs’ and what a lovely sentiment that is! I imagine they had a hard time finding anyone to argue against it! We’ll hear from experts in the field of mental health as well as some exhilarating debaters. This should make for a very interesting evening indeed.

HEALTH WEEK CHARITY CEILIDH
8pm, Qudos, QMU

The nights are drawing in and the best way to keep out the chill is by getting yourself down to the QMU for a wee knees up. The dears at the SRC and QMU have organised a wee ceilidh to keep us all toasty and to raise money for Student Action for Refugees. I am getting a touch old for the dancing, but I expect you younguns to be throwing yourselves around like nobody’s business.
