Freshers’ Week 2010

Freshers’ Week 2010 was yet another brilliant carnival of fun, confirming that if there’s anywhere in the UK that knows how to put on a blinding Freshers’ Week it’s the University of Glasgow.
Activities catered for all. During the day a cultural carnival event showcased music and food from the world over, student parents who have young children were invited to meet up at a ‘toddlers in the tent’ event, language cafes offered the chance for tea and cake and language exchange, film screenings went on in the unions which also both laid on breakfast every day to look after anyone feeling a little worse for wear. For those energetic souls who weren’t, the sports association offered free sports taster sessions across all its clubs – including busing people to snowboard and ski without any charge – and people who might not have sobered up at all took part in a trolley race through the park.
At night, things got a bit more heady. Campus’s two massive 1000+ people clubbing venues hosted club night after club night, with Pendulum and Alex Metric each taking over the decks during the week. Gigs from Bombay Bicycle Club and Diana Vickers were rapturously received by the mass of freshers crammed in to see them, there was comedy from Lee Nelson, hypnotism and open top alternative bus tours of the city – Freshers’ Week 2010 had it all and we’ve no doubt 2011 will somehow manage to be even bigger and better.
If there’s one thing that’s been reaffirmed year after year it’s this: the University of Glasgow hosts the country’s best freshers’ week. We can’t wait.
