SRC slam Carnage Pub crawls

Nationwide pub crawls organised by Carnage UK have been slammed by Glasgow University students for encouraging binge-drinking and sexually-demeaning acts. The Students’ Representative Council called for all students at the University to boycott the events.

Despite ‘drink responsibly’ slogans on the tshirts supplied by Carnage, participants were sold potent alcoholic shots and given free drink for removing items of clothing. The ‘bender’ and binge-drinking culture prevalent during the night flew in the face of the many health warnings that have come from health professionals, government officials, and student bodies alike.

Students were encouraged to strip items of clothing and behave like ‘dirty pornstars’ – the theme of the Glasgow night. Girls were encouraged to remove their underwear, and boys were encouraged to ask them to do so. The SRC condemned Carnage’s provocation of these events, which placed participants – both male and female – in extremely vulnerable positions.

Gavin Lee, President of the SRC explained: “It is disgraceful that this company is willing to risk the safety and wellbeing of students. The events have certainly lived up to their name: it was carnage, and potentially extremely detrimental to the students’ involved.”
