13/11/2012 – Welfare Week: Tuesday 13th November
‘Your Home – Your Money – Your Rights’, Midday, Williams Room, John McIntyre Building
Stressed about getting your deposit back at the end of your tenancy? You needn’t be with the all-new, handy Tenancy Deposit Scheme ... As it happens, the 13th November is the date by which most existing tenancy deposits will have to be protected by the third party scheme. The GUSRC Advice Centre team will be on hand with more information about this and other details on getting repairs done, reclaiming unlawful admin fees, and other common problems people have with landlords or letting agents, so head to the Williams Room on the 13th for 12pm. This event is a talk followed by a Q&A session with healthy refreshments so you don’t miss your lunch break. The GUSRC Advice Centre is a place where you can always pop in for practical advice on anything that may be bothering you, all year around and not just during Welfare Week.
‘Recharge Your Brain’ Meditation Session, 1pm-1.30pm, Gilchrist Postgraduate Club
When you are learning, maintaining your concentration, focus and motivation can feel like a constant battle... Your ability to absorb and process information is greatly improved if you take the time to allow your brain a breather. Welfare Week is going to help you do that. If you are a postgrad student, come along and experience a short and effective meditation to ‘Recharge Your Brain’. You will learn about the benefits of meditation that you can use again and again to relax and recharge your brain when it become overloaded with information...come along, and feel the benefits.
12/11/2012 – Welfare Week: Monday 12th November
‘Have the Happiest Day of Your Life’ Workshop, 1pm-3pm, Williams Room, John McIntyre Building – Led by Lauren Robertson
‘Do you wake up with worry? Do you lunch with loneliness? Do you sleep with sadness...? Some of us find it difficult to get through the day without the accompaniment of stress, worry or negative emotions. In this fun, informative and intensive 2 hour workshop, you will be guided in how to improve your wellbeing from the minute you wake up, to the minute you go to sleep. Learning how to develop and maintain great self-esteem, a sense of purpose, and the ability to deal with stress without feeling overwhelmed.
Using affirmations, intentional positive thinking, stress management and self-acceptance techniques. Hope to see you there!’ Unfortunately, the places in this workshop are limited so get in touch at [email protected] to book a spot. Feel free to turn up on the day to see if there are any spare places but apologies in advance if we have to turn you away.
Welfare Week Debate, 7pm, GUU Debates Chamber
Want to give your brain a bit of stimulation? Head down to the GUU Debates Chamber to witness what will be a room-splitting debate. A taboo topic which is finally being talked about and acknowledged in the wake of the Glasgow Guardian’s recent article: ‘This House Believes that Selling Sex is a Legitimate Way to Pay for a Degree’. Organised by the Dialectic Society and the GUU this promises to be an interesting debate.

09/10/2012 – University Community Impact Challenge
Are you interested in taking part in a unique personal experience that will help you develop new skills whilst tackling specific, individual needs of a local charity? The SRC and the University are working together with Three Hands and Morgan Stanley to recruit a team of around 6 students to take on a challenging 7-week project with a local community organisation. The project has been tailored to ensure that you can make a tangible difference to the community in which you live, including being able to win £5,000 for your charity.
You will be given training and be supported by a Morgan Stanley mentor, but will also be able to work closely within your team and charity. Six other universities from across the UK are taking part, with all teams invited to the announcement of the winners at Morgan Stanley HQ in London. The charity selected for the Glasgow team is http://www.carerslink.org.uk
