Vice President (Learning and Development) is the most varied of the sabbatical roles on the SRC Executive. It involves responsibility for all academic matters that may arise throughout the year, and for continuing academic and personal development of students at the University of Glasgow.
My first main body of work is to organise and run Freshers’ Week 2007 on behalf of the SRC and to work closely with the other student bodies to make sure Glasgow’s new students get the best start to one of the most exciting experiences you will have.
The major academic issues that we can predict for this year will be the introduction of the new academic structure, the beginnings of Personal Development Plans (PDP) and looking at the Advisor of Studies system. I will be working closely with the SRC Council, and particularly the Faculty Convenors, and with the University to make sure these are brought in and dealt with in the most student-friendly way possible.
In terms of development my biggest tasks will be to simplify the clubs and societies affiliation procedures to make it as easy as possible for clubs and socs to benefit from our knowledge, expertise and support that we offer. I will also be facilitating student rep training to make sure the student or class reps that you elect will be qualified to represent your views to members of staff in your department. I will also be helping re-launch the Student Volunteer Support Service to raise awareness of the good work student volunteers are already doing and to increase the numbers participating in the schemes we provide.
Before being elected Vice President (Learning and Development) I had been on the SRC Council for two years. I began as a Faculty Ordinary Rep in the Law and Financial Studies Faculty, and progressed to become Faculty Convenor for Law Business and Social Sciences. Last year I was also an active member of the Non-Sabbatical Executive.
I have also been involved with the SRC Freshers’ Week for the past two years, as a Helper in 2005 and as a Team Leader in 2006. Hopefully the different experiences I’ve had of the SRC give me the relevant experience to work hard for the students of Glasgow University in my year as Vice President.
I’m always keen to have feedback on what we’re doing, or for you to raise any concerns you may have with learning or development issues. Please contact me in whichever way you’re most comfortable – phone, email or by popping into the office for a quick chat.
