FAQs for Class Representatives
How do I get started in my role?
- Introduce yourself at the start of the year in one of the lectures. Make sure everyone knows your name, what your role is and how to contact you.
- Get your photo, and contact details posted on the departmental notice board. Also make sure your details are included in the SRC Class Rep database.
- Inform the class about upcoming SSLC’s, get their input and remember and feedback what went on.
- Keep in contact with your College/School Convenor, who can give advice and support and may even have had a similar issue to deal with.
How do I deal with a problem a student has brought to me?
Make sure you get the full story from a student who wants you to help. Decide if it’s an isolated issue or affects other students as well. If it’s isolated then the Staff Student Liason Committee may not be the correct place to address it, and a less public approach may be necessary.
Approve any plan of action with the student. Follow the plan through and report back to the student. Remember if you’re unsure or need any help, speak to your College/School Convenor or the Vice President (Learning & Development).
All this information and more can be found in the power point presentation Becoming a Class Representative.
What Does Training Involve?
The training package offered to Class Reps by the SRC is put together in conjunction with sparqs but has been tailored to specifically meet the needs of Glasgow students.
- It involves group activities designed to get Class Reps thinking about the kinds of areas in which you can have an impact and things which are outwith your remit.
- Support structures are outlined so you know where to look for help and who to ask about important issues.
- The SRC and the University committees are briefly outlined, giving the answers to many common questions.
- Promotion and negotiation skills are discussed to help you get the most out of your time as a Class Rep.
- Training lasts for two and a half hours and once completed is added as a flourish to your academic transcript (as long as you remember to fill out the sign-up sheet at the start of the training!).
What should I do if elections haven’t been organised?
If your tutor or lecturer has not facilitated the election of student representatives, ask why or contact the SRC. For more information on the Course Rep system in general, please contact Class Reps or Tuula Eriksson, Vice-President (Learning & Development)
